Social service and care

For various reasons we may all at times need support in our everyday life. One of our most important tasks is to make sure that the residents get the support and care they need to live an independant life. This site will give you information about the support and care that is available for you who live or stay in Sunne Municipality.

Holding hands

The Social Welfare Service is a municipal responsibility, available for all residents. The Swedish Social Services Act specifies the kinds of assistance you may receive and defines the municipality’s obligations. All residents in Sweden are entitled to support from the Social Service if they need it.

The needs for support may vary: problems of economic nature, alcohol or drug abuse, violence and other forms of cruelty, worries for family members living on the edge.

 Holding hands

The Social Welfare Service has a special responsibility for the following groups:

Departments

Support for children and young people

Children and young people should have the possibility to grow up in a secure milieu under satisfactory conditions of life. The Social Welfare Service is supposed to act in the best interests for the child. That is one of the key functions.

Children are considered as such up to the age of 18 in Sweden. The UN Convention states that the best interests of the child must be the primary factor in decisions that concern children. Adults responsible for such decisions have to listen carefully to the child’s own wishes and to be aware of circumstances faced by the child concerned, at home, at school and elsewhere.

Support for parents

Mothers and fathers with difficulties are entitled to support and assistance from the Social Welfare Service.

Contact Social Services if a child is in need of assistance

The Social Welfare Service is responsible for providing support and protection for children and young people in difficult situations. The Swedish Social Services Act stipulates that all adults should notify the Social Welfare Service if a child is considered to need some assistance. The notification may be done anonymously.

When a child is in need of assistance

If the Social Welfare Service is notified about a child in need of assistance we are responsible for the investigation of the circumstances. The investigation starts on receipt of the notification to be completed within four months. Investigations may, however, take longer, if for example a medical opinion or a police investigation is required.

The parents of the child should be informed about the start, routines and rules for the investigation.

The parents and family members must be ensured by the welfare officer not to experience any unnecessary problems by the investigation. If required, the Social Welfare Service may contact experts, public authorities and private persons in order to determine if the child needs support.

Advice and support for parents and families

When the investigation is completed, the family may be offered support of various kinds. A contact family could for example help the family by taking care of the child at weekends, or a contact person could meet the family in their home or elsewhere.

Support and care

To be able to live in your own home, you may be entitled to having some home help services, on a means-tested basis. Primarily, it could be personal service such as meals, dressing or taking a shower. To feel more secure, you may also be entitled to facilities such as an alarm system to call for assistance.

If a family member is caring for you, he/she can be releived when needed. You could also apply for participating in the day-centre activities or, if needed, for the transfer to a short-time accomodation. Should you find it too difficult to live in your own home, you could apply for accomodation in specially adapted facilities for elderly people – for example in service blocks, sheltered accomodations or nursing homes.
