The monument, was erected as a symbol for the Finnish immigration to Värmland and the emigration from here to America. The incription on the base says: In Commemoration of the connection with our kinsmen to the west and to the east of the waters.
Coming from the south on route E45 you can not miss the monument, next to the golf course with the Fryken lake in the background it is a scenic entrence to Sunne.
A Finnish artist
The monument was initiated in 1953 by Svante Påhlson, the owner of the Rottneros Papermill. As donor, he entrusted the artist Jussi Mäntynen the task to create the monument. During the process, Påhlson inspected the work, quite critical about details. The day the Eagle was about to be cast, Påhlson came to inspect it and happened to touch the soft clay. Mäntynen got very angry and Påhlson backed away, terrified. For quite a while they stared at each other before they both burst into laughter and apologized. Påhlson touched the clay, and Eagle is there.
The inauguration of the monument took place the
22nd June 1953. Among those present were the county governor of Värmland and the ambassadeurs of Finland and USA. The banquet could not be held in Sunne as there were no suitable premises! Instead it took place at the Stadshotellet in Karlstad.
